Chapter 1: The First Signature

By the time the ambulance reached Manhattan General, Richard Sterling had already taken control.
Not with shouting.
With silence.
Three black SUVs lined the emergency entrance before sunrise. His private security team sealed off the hallway while the hospital director personally escorted Clare into a secure treatment suite.
The emergency physician removed her torn silk sleeve and stopped counting after the nineteenth bruise.
"Fractured wrist. Deep tissue injuries. Multiple impacts from a blunt object."
Richard didn't react.
He simply asked one question.
"Can she testify today?"
The doctor looked surprised.
"If she's conscious... yes."
"Good."
Matthew woke up three hours later in Lauren Thorne's Tribeca apartment.
His phone exploded with notifications.
BOARD MEETING MOVED TO 8:00 A.M.
URGENT—GENERAL COUNSEL REQUESTS YOUR IMMEDIATE PRESENCE.
ALL INVESTOR CALLS RESCHEDULED.
He smiled.
Probably another acquisition.
Exactly the kind of crisis only he could solve.
When he entered NexusCore headquarters, something felt different.
Nobody greeted him.
The receptionist wouldn't meet his eyes.
Even his executive assistant quietly stepped aside without saying good morning.
Inside the boardroom sat twelve directors.
At the head of the table...
Richard Sterling.
Matthew stopped walking.
"What the hell is this?"
Richard folded his hands.
"You'll find out."
The company's lead attorney slid a thick folder across the polished table.
Matthew opened it.
His smile disappeared.
Emergency Shareholder Resolution.
Attached beneath it...
Every investment agreement from seven years earlier.
Every amendment.
Every voting trust.
Every signature.
Including Clare's.
Then Richard quietly spoke.
"My daughter never gave away her founder's control."
Matthew's face turned white.
"What?"
"The shares you believed belonged to you..."
May you like
Richard looked directly into his eyes.
"...were never yours."
