CHAPTER 1: THE LAST ORDER

“I already did.”

The words had barely left my mouth when two members of estate security entered the kitchen.

They did not look at Damien.

They looked at me.

“Ms. Lang,” the security director said respectfully. “The property has been secured. Corporate vehicles are being collected, and all private access codes have been disabled.”

Richard’s face turned dark.

“I hired you.”

The director remained expressionless.

“No, sir. Lang International paid our company. Ms. Lang controls Lang International.”

Vivienne gripped the back of her chair.

“This is our home.”

I looked around the kitchen where they had spent the morning reminding me that I was beneath them.

The shattered French press still lay across the floor. Coffee had reached the edge of Bianca’s silk slippers, but she seemed too stunned to notice.

“This estate belongs to Horizon Legacy Trust,” I said. “You have occupied it under a family residency agreement.”

Richard’s eyes narrowed.

“You cannot remove us from our own property.”

“The agreement ended the moment any resident created a danger to the trust’s principal beneficiary.”

Damien glanced toward the small camera mounted above the pantry door.

For the first time, he appeared to remember that the entire kitchen was under surveillance.

His eyes returned to me.

“Sophia, listen.”

His voice had changed.

The anger was gone.

In its place was something weaker.

Fear.

“We can talk about this privately.”

“You had a private moment with me eleven minutes ago.”

I touched my cheek.

“You used it to show me exactly who you are.”

Damien stepped closer, lowering his voice.

“I lost my temper.”

“No. You revealed it.”

“It was one mistake.”

Bianca stared at me.

“You destroyed our lives over a cup and a plate?”

I turned toward her.

“This was never about the dishes.”

My gaze dropped to the broken glass at her feet.

“It was about what you believed you were allowed to do to another person.”

Bianca’s mouth opened, but no words came out.

Richard’s phone rang again.

He answered immediately.

“This is Richard Lang.”

His expression changed as he listened.

“What do you mean the lenders have withdrawn?”

A second voice was loud enough to escape from the phone, though I could not make out the words.

Richard turned toward me.

“You contacted the banks.”

“I contacted everyone who had the right to know that the Lang family no longer represented the company.”

Vivienne moved beside her husband.

“Richard, fix this.”

He ended the call and looked at her helplessly.

For decades, Richard had built his image around absolute control.

Now he looked like a man watching the walls of his kingdom disappear.

Damien reached for my hand.

I stepped back before he could touch me.

His face tightened.

“You married me because you loved me.”

“I did.”

The truth hurt more than I expected.

I had not married him as part of a plan.

I had not entered his life to punish his family or steal their name.

I had loved the man he pretended to be.

Damien had been thoughtful during our courtship. He had remembered small details, supported my charitable projects, and spoken endlessly about building a kinder future than the one his parents had created.

Perhaps some part of him had even believed those words.

But power had returned him to his true nature.

The moment he believed I belonged to him, kindness became unnecessary.

“I loved the man who opened doors for strangers,” I said quietly. “The man who told me he wanted to rebuild his family with integrity.”

“I am that man.”

“No.”

I held his gaze.

“You were performing for a woman you wanted to possess.”

The security director stepped forward.

“Mr. and Mrs. Lang, Bianca, Damien—you may collect essential personal belongings. Everything else will be inventoried and returned after legal review.”

Vivienne laughed in disbelief.

“You expect us to walk out carrying suitcases?”

“I expect you to follow the same rules you demanded from everyone beneath you.”

She moved toward me, fury flashing across her face.

“You ungrateful little—”

“Careful, Vivienne.”

My voice remained calm.

“You are standing inside a house you no longer have permission to enter.”

She stopped.

For several seconds, no one moved.

Then Damien’s phone displayed another notification.

He looked down.

His company email had been disabled.

His executive profile had vanished from the corporate directory.

His board position had been suspended pending investigation.

He stared at the screen as if it had betrayed him.

“You planned this,” he whispered.

“I prepared for the possibility that your family had not changed.”

“You were waiting for me to fail.”

“No, Damien.”

I looked at the ring still resting beside the spilled coffee.

“I was hoping you wouldn’t.”

That was the first truth that truly broke him.

His shoulders lowered.

His expression flickered between shame and panic.

But before he could respond, the front doors opened somewhere beyond the hallway.

Footsteps crossed the marble entrance.

A moment later, Marcus Hale entered the kitchen carrying a black leather case.

Marcus was in his early forties, calm and sharply dressed, with the quiet authority of a man who never needed to raise his voice.

He stopped beside me.

“The emergency board meeting begins in twenty minutes,” he said. “There is also another matter.”

He placed the case on the island and opened it.

Inside were printed bank records, confidential emails, and property transfers bearing Richard’s signature.

Richard’s face went pale.

Marcus looked directly at him.

“Our review uncovered several unauthorized transactions involving trust-owned assets.”

I turned toward Richard.

“What transactions?”

Marcus removed the first document.

“Mr. Lang has been moving company funds through three private holding firms for almost eighteen months.”

Vivienne stared at her husband.

“Richard?”

He said nothing.

Marcus continued.

“The total amount is forty-seven million dollars.”

The kitchen fell silent.

Damien looked at his father.

“You stole from the company?”

Richard straightened his jacket.

“I protected this family.”

“You stole from me,” I said.

Richard’s gaze hardened.

“You were never supposed to know.”

And with that single sentence, he gave Marcus everything we needed.

Marcus discreetly touched his phone screen.

The confession had been recorded.

Richard realized it one second too late.

His confidence finally disappeared.

Outside, another vehicle approached the estate.

This one did not belong to corporate security.

Through the tall kitchen windows, I saw two dark government sedans stop in the circular driveway.

Marcus closed the leather case.

“Financial investigators arrived earlier than expected.”

Richard took one unsteady step backward.

Vivienne looked from the approaching investigators to her husband.

“What have you done?”

Richard did not answer.

May you like

For the first time in their lives, every member of the Lang family understood the same terrifying truth.

Losing the empire was only the beginning.
