CHAPTER 4 — THE LAST ORDER HE EVER GAVE

Everything stopped.

The nurses.

The security officers.

Even the sound of the rolling bed seemed to disappear beneath the fire alarm.

Adrian stood at the end of the corridor with smoke curling behind him.

His expensive suit was wrinkled.

His hair had fallen across his forehead.

The polished hospital director was gone.

All that remained was the frightened man beneath the reputation.

“Step away from my wife,” he said.

One security officer slowly reached for his radio.

Adrian lifted the weapon.

“Don’t.”

Chloe’s bed was positioned between us and the operating room.

Dr. Ortiz leaned close to her.

“Keep breathing. Do not sit up.”

Adrian held up the medical documents.

“I am still her legal proxy.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“No, you’re not. A judge suspended that authority forty minutes ago.”

“You think a judge decides what happens inside my hospital?”

“This is no longer your hospital.”

Adrian looked toward Chloe.

“Tell them to leave.”

She stared at him.

The baby’s heartbeat continued to fall on the monitor.

Dr. Ortiz whispered urgently, “We are running out of time.”

I stepped in front of Chloe’s bed.

Adrian aimed the gun toward me.

“You ruined everything,” he said.

“No. You did.”

“I built this institution from nothing.”

“You built it on frightened women and forged records.”

“They needed me.”

“They survived you.”

His jaw tightened.

Behind him, smoke thickened along the ceiling.

The fire had likely been set as a distraction, but the sprinklers had not activated.

Adrian had disabled more than the lights.

He had intended to trap us.

“Move, Evelyn.”

“No.”

“Your daughter will lose that child because of you.”

Chloe pushed herself higher against the pillows.

“No,” she said.

Adrian looked at her.

She was pale, exhausted, and terrified.

But she did not lower her eyes.

“You did this,” Chloe continued. “Not Mom. Not the investigators. You.”

“I protected you.”

“You controlled me.”

“I gave you everything.”

“You took everything.”

The words struck him harder than any accusation from me could have.

His arm trembled.

For the first time, Chloe saw it too.

The man who had dominated her life was not powerful.

He was desperate.

The security officer nearest the wall moved suddenly.

Adrian turned.

The officer struck his wrist as the weapon fired.

The shot tore into the ceiling.

Everyone dropped.

Daniel pulled me behind the examination bed.

A second officer tackled Adrian against the wall.

The gun slid across the floor.

Adrian fought wildly, shouting that the hospital belonged to him.

Three officers forced him down and secured his hands behind his back.

Chloe watched silently as her husband was lifted from the floor.

Adrian turned his head toward her.

“You’ll regret this.”

Chloe answered without hesitation.

“No. I’ll remember it.”

Dr. Ortiz pushed the bed through the operating-room doors.

The fire alarm continued outside, but emergency crews had reached the east wing. The smoke was contained to an administrative storage room.

Inside the operating room, the world narrowed to bright lights, medical instruments, and Chloe’s frightened eyes.

“The baby’s heart rate is unstable,” Dr. Ortiz explained. “We need an emergency C-section.”

Chloe began to shake.

The procedure itself was not what frightened her.

It was Adrian’s voice inside her memory.

You will never wake up.

I stood beside her and held her hand.

“Look at me.”

Tears slid silently toward her ears.

“What if he was right?”

“He is not in this room.”

“What if something happens?”

“Then Dr. Ortiz will handle it. Not Adrian. Not Marcus. People who chose to protect you are standing here.”

Dr. Ortiz looked over the surgical curtain.

“Chloe, I will explain every medication before it is administered. Maya will document every dose. Your mother can remain beside you.”

Control returned to Chloe one choice at a time.

She nodded.

“Do it.”

Minutes stretched into an eternity.

Then a small cry rose above the machines.

Sharp.

Strong.

Alive.

Dr. Ortiz lifted a tiny baby girl into view.

Chloe made a sound between a laugh and a sob.

“That’s your daughter,” I whispered.

The nurse placed the baby against Chloe’s chest.

She had a full head of dark hair and one small fist pressed beneath her chin.

Chloe touched her cheek.

“Hi, Grace.”

“You chose a name?” I asked.

Chloe nodded.

“I needed to believe we would get here.”

Outside the operating room, Adrian Vale was taken into custody.

Inside, Chloe held the child he had tried to use as another instrument of control.

Grace opened her eyes for only a moment.

Then she settled against her mother’s heartbeat.

Hours later, detectives confirmed that the gun had been registered to the hospital security department.

The fire had been deliberately started.

And recovered messages showed that Adrian had ordered Marcus Wren to administer an unauthorized combination of medications during Chloe’s surgery.

There could be no misunderstanding now.

No private explanation.

No reputation strong enough to bury the truth.

As dawn appeared beyond the hospital windows, Daniel entered the recovery room.

“The board voted unanimously,” he said.

“Adrian has been permanently removed from every Vale Health company.”

Chloe looked down at Grace.

“What happens to the hospitals?”

“The state will appoint temporary administrators. The board wants to rename the network.”

I shook my head.

“Changing the name is not enough.”

Daniel looked at me.

“What do you suggest?”

Chloe answered before I could.

“Open every sealed complaint.”

Her voice was tired but firm.

“Find every woman he frightened into silence.”

Daniel nodded.

“We will.”

Chloe looked at me.

For the first time in years, her face was peaceful.

But our fight was not finished.

Adrian had lost his hospital.

He had lost his license.

May you like

He had lost his freedom.

Now we had to make sure he could never rebuild his power somewhere else.
