Chapter 3: Begging for Scraps
It took less than twenty-four hours for the panic to set in. By Wednesday morning, Julian was sweating through his designer suit in the lobby of Sterling Enterprises. When he was finally allowed up to the executive suite, he looked less like a groom and more like a dead man walking.
Emily was sitting behind a massive oak desk, signing documents without looking up as he entered.

"You misunderstand the situation, Julian. You think I’m doing this out of jealousy. I’m doing this out of business," she said, her tone conversational but lethal. "You were a bad investment. The girl at the wedding just triggered the termination clause in our contract."

"Contract? We were getting married!" he sputtered.
"You were being bought," Emily corrected sharply. "And now, you're being liquidated. Security will show you out."
