Chapter 4: Healing and a New Light

With the monster behind bars, our house finally felt like a home again. I officially hired a professional medical team to assist with my mother’s physical therapy, but Elena refused to leave my mother's side.

"She is like a mother to me now, Daniel," Elena said softly one evening as we watched Mom laugh while playing a board game. "I want to make sure she feels safe."

Over the next six months, I watched a beautiful transformation. The terror faded from my mother’s eyes, replaced by joy and vitality. She began to walk again, her wheelchair pushed to the corner of the room as a relic of the past. And the credit for that recovery belonged entirely to Elena.

I found myself looking forward to coming home every single day. I looked forward to Elena’s laughter, her fierce intelligence, and the quiet moments we shared over coffee after my mother went to sleep. We had been bonded by fire, but what grew out of the ashes was a profound, undeniable love.

One evening, while helping Elena prepare dinner, I caught her looking at me. The air grew still, charged with an emotion we had both been hiding for months. I reached out, gently tracing the faint, silvery scar above her eyebrow—the mark of her bravery.

"You saved my family, Elena," I whispered. "And somewhere along the way, you saved me too."

She smiled, her eyes bright with tears. "I would do it all over again, Daniel."
