Chapter 1: The Woman Behind the Locked Door

Vivian Moretti’s wineglass slipped from her fingers.
It struck the marble staircase and shattered.
No one moved.
Alejandro remained beside Elena, his body positioned between her and Vivian. His phone was still pressed to his ear.
“Freeze everything,” he repeated calmly. “Personal accounts, corporate cards, investment funds, property transfers. Anything tied to Vivian Moretti or her holding companies.”
Vivian descended one step.
“You can’t do that.”
Alejandro ended the call and looked at her.
“I just did.”
The confidence Vivian had worn for years was beginning to crack, but she quickly forced another smile.
“You’re exhausted, Alejandro. You’ve been traveling all day, and now you’ve walked into a confusing situation.”
He glanced at Elena’s bare feet.
At the bruises around her wrists.
At the gray servant’s uniform hanging loosely from her body.
“There’s nothing confusing about this.”
Vivian continued down the staircase.
“Elena has been unwell for a very long time.”
Elena flinched at the sound of Vivian saying her name.
Alejandro noticed.
His anger deepened, but his voice remained controlled.
“Don’t come any closer.”
Vivian stopped.
For the first time, uncertainty entered her eyes.
Alejandro turned to the servants gathered along the walls.
“Someone tell me what happened here.”
No one answered.
The housekeeper stared at the floor. The butler tightened his jaw. Two young maids stood near the dining room entrance, their hands trembling.
Vivian gave them a cold look.
That single glance explained their silence.
Alejandro faced them again.
“Vivian has no authority in this house anymore. She cannot dismiss you, threaten your families, or control your wages. I will personally protect anyone who tells me the truth.”
An older maid named Rosa slowly raised her head.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Mrs. Castillo never left the estate.”
Vivian’s face hardened.
“Be quiet.”
Rosa stepped forward despite the fear in her expression.
“Three years ago, Mrs. Castillo became ill after dinner. Miss Moretti told us she had been taken to a private hospital.”
Elena’s fingers tightened around Alejandro’s sleeve.
“But she wasn’t taken anywhere,” Rosa continued. “She was moved into the old east wing.”
Alejandro stared at her.
The east wing had been closed since his grandfather’s death. Vivian had convinced him that water damage had made it unsafe.
“Who helped her?” Alejandro asked.
“The former security chief,” Rosa said. “And Dr. Marcus Bell.”
Alejandro recognized the name immediately.
Dr. Bell had been Elena’s personal physician.
He had also been the man who signed a report claiming Elena suffered from severe emotional instability shortly before her disappearance.
Vivian folded her arms.
“This is ridiculous. You’re listening to servants who have no idea what they’re talking about.”
Alejandro ignored her.
“Take me to the east wing.”
Rosa hesitated.
“The door is hidden behind the library wall.”
Alejandro felt Elena’s grip tighten.
“No,” Elena whispered.
It was the first word she had spoken since he recognized her.
He turned toward her.
Her face had lost what little color remained.
“You don’t have to go back there,” he said.
Elena looked toward the dark hallway leading to the library.
“There’s something inside.”
“What?”
“Proof.”
Vivian suddenly moved toward the front doors.
Alejandro caught the motion from the corner of his eye.
“Stop her.”
Two security guards stepped into her path.
Vivian looked at them in disbelief.
“You work for me.”
One of the guards shook his head.
“We work for the Castillo family.”
Vivian turned back to Alejandro.
“You’re making a terrible mistake.”
“No,” he said. “My mistake was trusting you.”
Alejandro wrapped his coat around Elena’s shoulders and led her toward the library.
Behind a wall of antique books, Rosa pressed a hidden switch.
A narrow door opened with a low mechanical sound.
Cold air drifted from the darkness beyond it.
Alejandro switched on the light.
A long corridor appeared.
At the end stood a reinforced wooden door with a keypad lock.
Elena stopped breathing.
Alejandro felt her body begin to shake.
He turned to her immediately.
“Elena, look at me.”
Her eyes remained fixed on the door.
“I tried to escape through that hallway,” she whispered. “She found me before I reached the stairs.”
Alejandro’s expression tightened.
“You’re safe now.”
Elena slowly looked at him.
“You don’t know what she did.”
“Then tell me when you’re ready.”
He did not ask her to be strong.
He did not demand an explanation.
He simply held out his hand.
After a long moment, Elena placed her trembling fingers in his.
Rosa entered the keypad code.
The lock clicked.
Inside was a small bedroom with barred windows, a narrow bed, and a surveillance camera mounted in the corner.
On a desk sat dozens of medication bottles labeled with Elena’s name.
Alejandro picked one up.
The prescribing physician was Dr. Marcus Bell.
Elena walked toward a loose floorboard beside the bed.
She knelt carefully and lifted it.
Underneath was a sealed plastic folder.
Inside were financial records, handwritten notes, and a small digital recorder.
“I started collecting things whenever Vivian forgot to lock the office,” Elena said. “Transfers. Contracts. Copies of your signature.”
Alejandro examined the papers.
Vivian had moved millions from Castillo family accounts into shell companies. She had also prepared documents declaring Elena legally incapable of managing her estate.
At the bottom of the folder was a signed power-of-attorney form.
Alejandro’s signature appeared on it.
He had never seen the document before.
“She forged it,” Elena whispered.
Alejandro looked toward the surveillance camera.
A small red light was still blinking.
“She was watching this room.”
A voice suddenly came through the speaker above the door.
Vivian’s voice.
“You should have stayed silent, Elena.”
Alejandro turned toward the camera.
Then Vivian continued.
“Because now he gets to learn why you were kept alive.”
Elena froze.
Alejandro stepped closer to the speaker.
“What are you talking about?”
A slow laugh filled the room.
“You always believed Elena was the victim.”
Vivian paused.
“But she was hiding something from you long before I ever locked that door.”
Alejandro looked at his wife.
Elena’s eyes filled with fear.

Vivian delivered the final blow.
“Ask her who really owns the Castillo empire.”
