Chapter 2: The Secret in Elena’s Name

The silence inside the hidden room became unbearable.

Alejandro looked at Elena.

She did not turn away, but shame and fear moved across her face.

“What does she mean?” he asked.

Elena lowered herself onto the edge of the bed.

“There’s something I should have told you before we were married.”

Alejandro remained standing.

Behind him, the security guards disconnected the surveillance camera while Rosa gathered the medication bottles as evidence.

Elena held her hands together.

“My father wasn’t only your father’s business partner.”

Alejandro waited.

“He saved Castillo Industries from bankruptcy twenty-five years ago. He invested everything he had, but your father refused to let anyone know the company needed help.”

Alejandro had grown up believing his father built the empire alone.

Elena continued.

“In exchange for saving the company, my father received a private controlling interest. Fifty-one percent.”

Alejandro’s eyes narrowed.

“That’s impossible.”

“The shares were placed in a trust under my mother’s family name. When my parents died, the trust passed to me.”

Alejandro sat beside her.

“You owned the company?”

“I controlled it,” Elena corrected. “But I never wanted you to think I married you because of the business. I was going to tell you after our third anniversary.”

Their third anniversary had been two weeks after Elena disappeared.

Alejandro looked down at the papers in his hands.

“Vivian found out.”

Elena nodded.

“She discovered the trust documents while helping your father organize the family archives. She realized that if I disappeared and was declared legally incapable, someone with power of attorney could control my shares.”

“And she forged my signature.”

“She also paid Dr. Bell to claim I had become unstable.”

Alejandro’s voice grew colder.

“Why keep you alive?”

“Because the trust required my physical signature for a permanent transfer. Vivian thought she could force me to sign.”

Elena rubbed her wrist unconsciously.

“I refused.”

Alejandro’s jaw tightened.

“For three years?”

“For three years.”

He stood and walked toward the window, fighting to control the rage moving through him.

Elena watched him carefully.

“You have every right to be angry with me.”

He turned.

“I’m not angry because you owned the company.”

“I lied by omission.”

“You were planning to tell me.”

“I waited too long.”

Alejandro crossed the room and knelt in front of her.

“What happened to you is not your fault.”

Elena’s composure broke.

Not with a scream.

Not with dramatic sobbing.

Just one exhausted breath that trembled as it left her body.

“For three years, she told me you had stopped searching.”

Alejandro’s face changed.

“She showed me photographs of you at charity events. Business dinners. Galas. She said you had replaced me.”

“I attended those events because she claimed they would keep public attention on your disappearance.”

Elena’s eyes closed.

“She said you knew I was here.”

Alejandro took her hands.

“I never knew.”

“I believe you now.”

Those four words nearly broke him.

A guard appeared at the door.

“Mr. Castillo, the police are here.”

Alejandro stood.

“Where is Vivian?”

The guard hesitated.

“She’s gone.”

Alejandro looked toward the hallway.

“How?”

“There’s a service tunnel beneath the wine cellar. One of the guards found the exit open.”

Vivian had planned an escape route.

But she had not escaped empty-handed.

A few minutes later, the family attorney arrived and discovered that the original trust certificate was missing from the mansion safe.

Without it, Elena could still prove ownership, but the legal process would be slower.

Vivian now possessed the one document that could let her negotiate with foreign investors and claim Elena had voluntarily transferred her shares.

Alejandro immediately ordered every airport, private airfield, and marina connected to the family placed under observation.

Elena stood near the library window, still wrapped in Alejandro’s coat.

“She won’t leave the city,” she said.

“How do you know?”

“She needs Dr. Bell.”

Alejandro looked at her.

“He kept recordings of every medical session. Vivian made him record me signing blank pages while I was under medication.”

“Where?”

“His private clinic.”

Alejandro took out his phone.

The police were already preparing a search warrant, but Elena stopped him.

“If Vivian knows the clinic is being watched, she’ll destroy everything.”

“What are you suggesting?”

Elena looked toward the storm outside.

“She still thinks I’m afraid of her.”

Alejandro understood immediately.

“No.”

“She needs my signature. She’ll come if she believes I’m willing to make a deal.”

“I just found you after three years. I’m not using you as bait.”

“You’re not using me.”

Elena stood straighter.

“I’m choosing to end this.”

Alejandro saw something return to her eyes.

Not the terror Vivian had planted there.

The strength Elena had possessed before she vanished.

He wanted to refuse.

Instead, he asked, “What do you need?”

Two hours later, Elena called Vivian from an unregistered phone.

Vivian answered after the first ring.

“I knew you would understand eventually,” she said.

Elena’s voice remained quiet.

“I’ll sign the transfer.”

Alejandro stood beside her, listening through an earpiece.

Vivian laughed softly.

“And what changed your mind?”

“I want to disappear. For real this time.”

“Where?”

“Dr. Bell’s clinic. Midnight.”

Vivian was silent for several seconds.

“Come alone.”

The call ended.

At eleven fifty-eight, Elena entered the clinic through the front entrance.

The lobby was dark.

Alejandro and the police waited in an abandoned building across the street.

A tiny microphone was hidden inside Elena’s coat button.

She walked slowly through the hallway until she reached Dr. Bell’s office.

The door opened.

Vivian stood inside with the missing trust certificate.

Dr. Bell waited behind the desk.

And beside him stood someone Alejandro never expected to see.

His father.

Mateo Castillo had supposedly died from a heart attack eighteen months earlier.

But there he was.

Alive.

Watching Elena with cold, familiar eyes.

“Sit down,” Mateo said.

Elena stopped in the doorway.

Across the street, Alejandro heard his father’s voice through the microphone.

Every trace of color left his face.

Vivian had not created the plan alone.

The man behind Elena’s disappearance had been the one person Alejandro had never questioned.

His own father.
