Chapter 1: The Coat Came Off

The courtroom fell into complete silence.
Claire's fingers finished unbuttoning the last button of her black coat.
She let it slide gently from her shoulders.
No dramatic movement.
No tears.
Only truth.
A collective gasp spread across the gallery.
Dark yellow bruises stretched across her collarbone. Faded scars crossed her ribs. The outline of healing fractures showed beneath the thin fabric of her dress.
Judge Eleanor Whitmore slowly removed her glasses.
Ethan stopped breathing.
His attorney froze with a document halfway out of a binder.
His mistress instinctively stepped backward.
Margaret Lawson quietly placed a thick stack of medical records onto the evidence table.
"Your Honor," she said evenly, "these records document twelve emergency room visits over the past eleven years."
She opened the first folder.
"Broken ribs."
The second.
"Dislocated shoulder."
The third.
"Concussion."
The fourth.
"Three separate facial fractures."
Each page carried the same note.
Patient declined to identify her attacker.
Judge Whitmore looked directly at Claire.
"Mrs. Bennett... was Mr. Bennett responsible for these injuries?"
Claire answered without hesitation.
"Every one of them."
Ethan shot to his feet.
"That's a lie!"
Margaret calmly pressed another button.
The courtroom monitors lit up.
Hospital photographs.
X-rays.
Emergency admission forms.
Then surveillance footage from the Bennetts' own garage.
Ethan grabbed Claire by the arm and shoved her into the side of her SUV after a charity gala.
The timestamp read:
October 18. Three years earlier.
Nobody spoke.
Not even Ethan.
