Chapter 5 — A Different Beginning

Three months later, the ballroom looked very different.
This time, Emily entered through the front entrance.
Not as a maid.
As Richard Ashford's newly appointed Director of Corporate Integrity.
Every employee stood and applauded.
Richard walked onto the stage.
He looked toward Emily before addressing the audience.
"Titles never reveal a person's worth."
"Character does."
He presented her with the company's highest civilian honor for extraordinary courage.
Emily accepted it with quiet humility.
"I didn't act because I wanted recognition," she said.
"I acted because one life is worth risking everything to protect."
The audience rose for a standing ovation.
Outside the ballroom, investigators announced the conviction of Daniel's criminal organization and the executives who had helped finance the plot.
Victoria accepted responsibility for her actions and later cooperated with authorities, helping dismantle the remaining network.
Justice had finally reached everyone involved.
As the celebration ended, Richard walked beside Emily.
"If you hadn't knocked that glass away..."
Emily smiled softly.
"You would've taken the next sip."
Richard looked across the ballroom one last time.
