Chapter 1: The First Lie Falls Apart

The officer didn't wait for an answer.
He knelt beside Lily while paramedics lifted her onto a stretcher. Her breathing was shallow, and faint traces of crushed pink tablets clung to the sleeve of her pajamas.
"What happened to her?" he asked.
Before I could speak, my mother stepped forward with practiced composure.
"She has a habit of sleepwalking," she said. "She must have climbed into the dumpster herself."
The officer looked from the heavy commercial dumpster to my four-year-old daughter.
"The lid weighs over forty pounds," he replied evenly. "Can she lift that?"
Silence.
Marcus handed over his phone.
"I recorded everything after Vanessa told us to check the trash."
The officer played the recording.
Vanessa's calm voice filled the morning air.
"Maybe check the trash."
Every guest arriving for the engagement party stopped walking.
No one spoke.
The officer slowly turned toward Vanessa.
"How did you know where the child was?"
For the first time that morning, her confident smile disappeared.
At the hospital, doctors confirmed Lily had been given a powerful sleep medication before she was left inside the dumpster.
"It likely prevented her from waking up," the pediatrician explained.
"If she'd remained there much longer in this heat..."
He didn't finish the sentence.
He didn't need to.
I held Lily's tiny hand while tears silently rolled down my face.
Marcus squeezed my shoulder.
"We're done protecting them."
I nodded.
"So are they."

That afternoon, detectives obtained a search warrant for my parents' home.
None of us expected what they would discover.
