Chapter 5: Justice and a New Beginning

Three months later, the courtroom remained silent as the verdicts were read.

Vanessa was convicted for administering medication to a child and abandoning her in conditions that placed her life at serious risk.

My mother and father were convicted for their roles in the abandonment and for attempting to mislead investigators.

Each was taken into custody from the courtroom.

None of them looked back.

Outside, reporters crowded the courthouse steps.

I ignored every microphone.

My attention stayed on Lily.

She held Marcus's hand with one side and mine with the other.

A fresh silver bracelet rested on her wrist.

The old one had been preserved as evidence.

One year later, Marcus and I were finally married.

This time there were no grand parties.

No family speeches.

No expensive decorations.

Only a quiet ceremony beside a lake.

Daniel walked me down the aisle.

When the officiant asked if anyone objected, the breeze was the only sound.

After the ceremony, Lily looked up at me with a bright smile.

"Mommy," she whispered.

"This is my favorite birthday ever."

I smiled through tears and kissed her forehead.
