CHAPTER ONE : THE FOOTAGE HE NEVER EXPECTED

The first image appeared on the restaurant’s main screen before Rafael could leave his chair.
It showed their table from fifteen minutes earlier.
Rafael sat with one hand around his wine glass, leaning toward Elena with the relaxed confidence of a man who believed no one important was listening.
His recorded voice filled the silent dining room.
“You’re going to pay the bill,” he said. “Then you’re going to sign the refinancing papers.”
On the screen, Elena remained still.
“And if I don’t?”
Rafael laughed.
“Then I’ll tell everyone your decisions destroyed the company. You’ll lose your reputation, your marriage, and whatever respect your father’s name still carries.”
Back in the present, Rafael’s face hardened.
“Turn that off.”
No one moved.
The restaurant owner, Victor Hale, stood beside the control panel with his hands calmly folded in front of him.
“You asked my staff to remove Mrs. Vega if she caused a scene,” Victor said. “I wanted to understand what kind of scene you were expecting.”
Several guests looked toward Rafael.
Three of them were members of his company’s board.
Another was the representative of the investment group Rafael had spent six months trying to impress.
Rafael rose from his chair.
“This is a private marital dispute.”
The footage continued.
On-screen Rafael pulled a leather folder from beneath the table and pushed it toward Elena.
“Sign it tonight,” he said. “I need two million dollars transferred before the banks open tomorrow.”
Elena’s recorded voice remained quiet.
“What happened to the last two million?”
“That isn’t your concern.”
“It became my concern when you used my signature.”
The dining room erupted in whispers.
Rafael looked sharply at Elena.
“You set me up.”
Elena wiped another streak of wine from her cheek.
“No. You chose the restaurant. You chose the table. You chose the words.”
She glanced at the camera above the bar.
“I simply stopped protecting you from your own choices.”
Rafael looked toward the board members.
“She’s twisting this. Elena handles the financial accounts. She knows exactly where the money went.”
One of the board members, Martin Cole, slowly stood.
“Did you use her signature without authorization?”
“Of course not.”
The screen changed.
Now the footage showed Rafael standing near the restaurant’s private service corridor earlier that evening. Beside him was Celeste Monroe, the company’s chief operating officer—and the woman Elena had suspected Rafael was seeing for nearly a year.
Celeste wore a silver dress and held a copy of the refinancing agreement.
Her voice came clearly through the speakers.
“Once Elena signs, the debt belongs to her trust.”
Rafael smiled on-screen.
“And after the transfer clears, I file for divorce.”
Celeste touched his lapel.
“What if she refuses?”
Rafael lifted his wine glass.
“She won’t. Elena always rescues me.”
In the dining room, every face turned toward him.
Rafael’s mouth opened, but no words came out.
The investor representative closed his notebook.
“We’re withdrawing from tomorrow’s funding meeting.”
“Wait,” Rafael said. “You don’t understand.”
“I understand enough.”
He walked away.
The three board members followed him toward a private corner of the restaurant.
Rafael’s confidence finally cracked.
He turned to Elena, lowering his voice.
“You have no idea what you’ve done. Without that transfer, hundreds of people could lose their jobs.”
Elena studied him.
For years, those words had worked.
Whenever Rafael made a reckless investment, she saved the company.
Whenever he offended a client, she repaired the relationship.
Whenever his spending created another emergency, she quietly moved money from her inheritance.
He had turned her loyalty into his business model.
Not anymore.
“You weren’t thinking about the employees when you moved company money into private accounts,” Elena said.
Rafael froze.
Victor reached beneath the control desk and picked up a sealed black envelope.
“This was delivered to Mrs. Vega twenty minutes before you arrived,” he said.
Rafael stared at it.
“What is that?”
Elena opened the envelope and removed a forensic accounting report.
“Proof that thirty-eight million dollars disappeared from Vega International over the last eighteen months.”
“That’s impossible.”
“Is it?”
Rafael’s eyes shifted toward Celeste.
But the chair beside the service corridor was empty.
She was gone.
Rafael reached for his phone and called her.
Straight to voicemail.
He called again.
Nothing.
Elena turned toward Victor.
“Play the second file.”
Rafael’s face drained of color.
“There’s another file?”
The screen went black for a moment.
Then Celeste appeared alone in the service corridor, speaking into her phone.

Her next words silenced even Rafael.
“He still thinks Elena is the target,” Celeste whispered. “By midnight, Rafael will take the blame for everything.”
