CHAPTER TWO ; THE MAN WHO THOUGHT HE WAS IN CONTROL

Rafael stared at the screen as if the image had struck him harder than the truth.

Celeste continued speaking on the recording.

“The transfer is already scheduled. Rafael’s authorization code will release the money, and Elena’s forged signature will make it look like a marital scheme.”

She paused, listening to the person on the other end.

“No. He doesn’t know I copied his access key.”

Rafael grabbed his phone and opened the company banking application.

His hands began to shake.

A transfer authorization had been entered forty minutes earlier.

Amount: $11.6 million.

Destination: Halcyon Strategic Consulting.

Status: Pending final release.

Rafael looked at Elena.

“Stop it.”

“I can’t,” Elena said.

“You control the accounts.”

“I controlled the accounts you knew about.”

He rushed toward her.

Victor stepped between them.

“Take a step back.”

Rafael stopped, aware that every guest in the restaurant was watching.

“Elena,” he said, forcing his voice to soften. “We can still fix this together.”

She almost laughed.

Together.

That was the word he used whenever he wanted her money, her name, or her silence.

When things went well, every success belonged to Rafael.

When they collapsed, the responsibility became theirs.

“You tried to leave me with the debt,” she said.

“I was angry. I said things I didn’t mean.”

“You prepared legal documents.”

“Celeste prepared them.”

“You handed them to me.”

“She manipulated me.”

Elena looked toward the screen.

“No, Rafael. She studied you.”

The door to the private dining room opened.

Two corporate attorneys entered, followed by Martin Cole and the other board members.

Martin held a tablet.

“We’ve reviewed the preliminary audit,” he said. “An emergency board vote has been requested.”

Rafael’s eyes narrowed.

“You can’t hold a board vote without the majority shareholder.”

Martin looked at Elena.

“We have the majority shareholder.”

Rafael slowly turned toward his wife.

For the first time that evening, he seemed genuinely afraid.

Elena placed the forensic report on the table.

Rafael had always believed she owned twenty percent of the company.

That was what appeared in the public filings.

What he did not know was that E.M. Heritage Holdings—the private trust that funded Vega International’s original expansion—belonged entirely to Elena.

Through that trust, she controlled another forty-four percent of the voting shares.

Together, her holdings gave her sixty-four percent control.

“You told me your father’s trust was dissolved,” Rafael whispered.

“I told you it was no longer available to rescue you.”

“That isn’t the same thing.”

“No. It isn’t.”

Martin placed the tablet on the table.

“The board has voted to remove Rafael Vega as chief executive officer, effective immediately.”

Rafael looked around the room.

“You can’t do this.”

“The vote is complete.”

“I built that company.”

Elena finally stood.

“You gave speeches for that company. Other people built it.”

Rafael pointed toward her stained dress.

“This is revenge.”

“No. Revenge would be destroying the company to hurt you.”

She picked up the leather folder he had wanted her to sign.

“I’m protecting it from you.”

His phone vibrated.

The pending transfer had changed status.

Released.

Rafael stared at the screen.

“No.”

The color disappeared from his face.

“She took it.”

One of the attorneys stepped closer.

“The transfer used your executive authorization.”

“I didn’t send it.”

“Your credentials did.”

“It was Celeste.”

“Then you’ll need to prove it.”

Rafael looked toward the restaurant entrance, as though Celeste might suddenly return and explain everything.

She did not.

Elena checked the time.

Celeste had been careful, but she had made one mistake.

She believed Elena had only discovered the scheme that evening.

In reality, Elena had known for three weeks.

The audit had already identified Halcyon Strategic Consulting as a shell company registered through an office in the Cayman Islands.

The transfer had been allowed to proceed for one reason.

To expose every person connected to the account.

Elena’s phone rang.

She answered.

A federal investigator spoke for less than twenty seconds.

When the call ended, Elena looked directly at Rafael.

“They found Celeste.”

“Where?”

“At the airport.”

Relief flashed across his face.

“Then this is over.”

Elena shook her head.

“No. She wasn’t alone.”

Victor changed the screen one final time.

A security image appeared showing Celeste leaving through the restaurant’s rear exit.

Beside her was a man carrying a black briefcase.

Rafael leaned closer.

He recognized the man immediately.

It was his personal attorney—the same attorney who had prepared Elena’s refinancing documents.

Rafael whispered his name.

“Daniel Cross.”

Elena’s expression hardened.

Daniel had represented Rafael for eight years.

He knew every account.

Every password.

Every weakness in the company.

And every secret in their marriage.

Rafael looked at Elena with fear replacing the last trace of arrogance.

“Daniel has copies of everything.”

“I know.”

“No, you don’t understand. He has information about your father’s estate.”

Elena went still.

“What information?”

May you like

Rafael swallowed.

“The accident that killed him.”
