CHAPTER 6: THE MAN IN THE HALLWAY

Naomi survived.

Doctors found no serious head injury, but she remembered almost nothing about the attack. She had been working late when the building’s electricity failed.

She heard the records room open.

Then someone grabbed her from behind.

Foundation security cameras had gone dark for eleven minutes.

Only one hallway camera continued recording.

It captured a man entering the building thirty minutes before the attack.

Victor Hale.

Elena watched the footage in the hospital waiting room.

Victor wore the same navy coat he had worn at the restaurant celebration. He entered through the side door with a keycard, walked toward the records room, and disappeared from view.

He never appeared on camera leaving.

Police found his keycard near Naomi’s desk.

Detective Sarah Lin turned toward Elena.

“Did Mr. Hale have authorization to enter the foundation after business hours?”

“Yes.”

“Did he have access to the donor database?”

“He had access to nearly everything.”

“Where is he now?”

Elena did not answer.

She had called Victor six times.

His phone went directly to voicemail.

Detective Lin closed her notebook.

“We’ve issued an alert.”

Elena returned to her office shortly before dawn.

Someone was waiting inside.

Victor stood near the window.

She stopped in the doorway.

“You should not be here.”

“I didn’t attack Naomi.”

“The security footage shows you entering.”

“I entered because you asked me to retrieve the restaurant footage.”

“That was at the company headquarters, not the foundation.”

“I received a message from your number telling me to meet you here.”

“I sent no message.”

Victor placed his phone on the desk.

The message appeared inside the same conversation thread he had used with Elena for years.

Come to the foundation. I found something connected to my father. Don’t call.

“I arrived at 10:16,” he said. “The building was empty. The power failed before I reached the records room. Someone hit me in the stairwell.”

Elena noticed a bruise near his hairline.

“When I woke up, my phone and keycard were gone. I knew how it would look, so I left.”

“You should have called the police.”

“I should have called you.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“Because I received another message.”

He opened an image.

It showed Elena leaving the correctional facility after meeting Rafael.

Beneath it were five words.

She already believes you did it.

Victor watched her reaction.

“You told me Rafael knew nothing.”

Elena did not apologize.

“Your father worked for Orion.”

“My father worked for hundreds of corporate clients.”

“Did you know?”

“I knew he represented a group called Orion Strategic Partners. He died when I was nineteen. He never explained what they did.”

“Rafael said he was one of their original attorneys.”

“Rafael would say anything to divide us.”

“He also warned me not to trust the foundation records. Hours later, someone broke into the foundation.”

Victor looked toward the city.

“My father left a box of personal documents. I never opened most of them.”

“Where is it?”

“At my mother’s house.”

They drove there before sunrise.

Victor’s mother had moved overseas after her husband’s death, leaving the old family house empty. The box remained in a locked storage room beneath the stairs.

Inside were contracts, photographs, letters, and cassette tapes.

At the bottom, Elena found a photograph of Mateo standing beside Victor’s father.

A woman stood between them.

She was younger in the photograph, but Elena recognized her immediately.

Marisol Crane.

Chairwoman of Meridian Capital.

One of the most powerful investors in the country.

On the back of the photograph, Mateo had written a date.

The date was three days before his death.

Beneath it were four words.

Marisol knows about Elena.

Victor stared at the handwriting.

“What did she know about you?”

Elena turned the photograph over again.

“I don’t think my father was trying to protect the company.”

She met Victor’s eyes.

“I think he was trying to protect me.”

A car door closed outside.

Victor looked through the window.

Three black vehicles had stopped along the curb.

Men in dark suits stepped onto the lawn.

May you like

Victor’s phone rang.

Marisol Crane’s name appeared on the screen.
